“No kidding, operator, my car’s full of bees!”
The message had a comic ring but there was real despair in the voice.
Operator Angela Genovese thought fast as she listened. A Connecticut housewife had returned for shopping to find her parked card covered by a swarm of bees.
Bystanders were sympathetic but not very helpful. It clearly wasn't a case for firemen or police. So the frantic woman turned to the telephone, remembering that ‘O for Operator’ often brings help in emergencies.
Miss Genovese reassured her caller, phoned the nearest beekeeper and explained the predicament. He brought a hive and gently transferred the swarm. Then a very grateful housewife climbed into her bee-free car and buzzed off home!
This odd little tale is true–and typical of the spirit that telephone men and women bring to their work. They try to be good neighbors and give good service.
Being human, they don't always succeed, of course. But thanks to their earnest effort, you enjoy the finest, fastest, friendliest telephone service in the world–at far less cost than most of the rest of the world
