The Phonebooth
Marc's Step-by-Step Telephone Switch

Step-by-Step Telephone SwitchIn early December 2008, I embarked on a trip to Oregon with my dad to pick up many of the parts of the Western Electric Step-by-Step telephone switch shown in the picture to the right. This picture was taken just after the last piece of heavy equipment -- the Line Group -- was mounted. Most of the wiring was not in place yet.

This part of The Phonebooth covers the trip, the project to put everything together, the connection to CNET (the collector's network) and an update on the current status.

Sounds

You can listen to a 14 second recording of the Line Group running a test of the line finders. This recording is 213KB in size:
Line Finder Test
In this recording you can hear each of the line finders step up to the 10th (top) level and to the 11th position before releasing. Between each line finder running you can hear the rotary switch step to the next available line finder. The rotary switch is not visible in the picture; the fuse panel in the middle of the picture is obstructing its view.

More to come on this page in the very near future.
